I want to...know about Reading Education Foundation

Reading Education Foundation (REF) is a nonprofit organization committed to supporting innovation and excellence in Reading Public Schools.  Through the years REF has responded to the growing need for increase community support in times of dwindling public resources.  A donation to REF does not just go to one school but is used throughout the district by funding teacher initiated grants.  These grants have supported teachers as they strive to bring creativity, collaboration, communication, empathy and innovation skills into the classroom by funding initiatives that are independent from the district’s budget nor are a line item in the budget.  In 2016, REF funded over $44,000 in grants bringing their total since its inception to over $500,000.

I want to...... know more about Understanding Disabilities in the Reading Public Schools.

Understanding Disabilities, Inc., is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that serves all students in the Reading public schools and the Reading community at large. Our mission is to educate children about disabilities to help them see beyond people's disabilities and to focus on the ways we are all the same inside.

Celebrating 30 years in the schools, we highlight all that people with disabilities can do and we promote a culture of inclusion and respect. Our curriculum provides information about a range of physical, sensory, and developmental disabilities to improve students’ school, social, and learning experiences. All students benefit from UD programming, but none more than those with disabilities.

Disability awareness programming is especially vital in inclusive classrooms where children who receive special education services are included in general education classrooms.   UD helps promote the good relationships and student well being that are necessary for increased learning to take place.
