School Site Council Elections
By law, each school in Massachusetts must have a School Council composed of family members, staff, the principal and a community member. The Birch Meadow School Council for the 2017-2018 School Year is:
Ashley Quinn, Parent (Term ends June 2019)
Valerie Gould-Heithaus, Parent (Term ends June 2019)
Alissa Gallegos (Term ends June 2020)
Jennifer Zani (Term ends June 2020)
Gioia Butler, Teacher (Term ends June 2019)
Jan Rhein (Term ends June 2020)
Julia Hendrix, Principal
The law outlines for 4 major areas of responsibility for these councils:
- Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards
- Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school
- Reviewing the annual school building budget
- Formulating a school improvement plan
The School Council meets monthly at Birch Meadow School. Currently our meetings are held from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. on the first Monday of the month, however, that time can be changed based on the needs of the Council members.
School Council members serve a two-year term. We will hold elections for School Council members in the spring of each year so that new members can attend the first meeting of the next school year. Organizing elections in this manner will allow for School Council members to be more involved in writing the School Improvement Plan, a task which is undertaken each fall.
Next year, the School Council will be involved in writing the School Improvement Plan, reviewing and analyzing academic, and behavioral data, and participating in our school community and culture work.
Currently we are seeking two family representatives and one teacher representative for two-year terms beginning September 2019, and ending June 2021. For transition purposes, the new members would attend the June 3, 2019 meeting.
