Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

Arrival/Drop Off Procedures

For the safety of the children, parents/guardians are not permitted to drive their vehicles into the staff parking area at any time while the children are coming to or leaving the school.

Students should arrive at school no earlier than 8:10 a.m.  The first bell rings at 8:15 a.m.  Before the first bell rings students should wait on the playground or in front of the school to enter the building.

In the event of bad weather conditions, a sign will be posted in the office window facing the traffic circle indicating inside arrival.  Students who arrive after 8:10 a.m. and before the 8:15 a.m. bell can proceed to the cafeteria to wait for the 8:15 a.m. bell.

On “out” days, entrance into the school is as follows:

Entering through doors other than the front door at 8:15 a.m.

Exterior Classroom Doors for Grades K, 1, 4, and 5:
Students in grades K, 1, 4, and 5 may enter the building through their respective exterior classroom doors when opened by staff at 8:15 a.m.

Hallway Door for Grades 2 and 3

Students in grades 2 and 3 should enter the building through the entrance at the end of the  2nd  and 3rd grade hallway when that entrance is opened by staff at 8:15 a.m.

After 8:15 a.m. all students must enter through the front doors to the school.  Please do not knock on classroom doors for your child to enter after 8:15. 

 

Driveway Drop Off:

If you drive your child to school and drop them off in the entrance circle, please follow these procedures:

When you enter the driveway pull as far foward as you are able to pull up.

Children must exit the vehicle on the right hand side and the sidewalk.  Children should never exit from the middle of the driveway.

Parents stay in their vehicle at drop off.

Once your child has exited the car, you can pull out and around the line of cars in front of you as long as there is not a school bus or van with flashing lights, indicating the children are loading or unloading.

 

Parking

The parking lot is for staff parking only.

There is legal on-street parking available in the front of the school and along Birch Meadow Drive.

It is against the law to park in the fire lane or handicap spaces at any time without a valid permit. Parking is not permitted in the staff parking lot, in the drop off circle, and in crosswalks.

 

Dismissal/Pick Up Procedures

When picking up your child at dismissal, please be aware of and abide by the following guidelines:

There is no general pick-up or parking in the traffic circle at dismissal.  School buses, school vans, after-school program vans, pick-up for students in Connections/Compass, disabled pick-up, or those who have made special arrangements with the principal are the only vehicles allowed in the driveway at dismissal.
Students in Grades K, 1, 4 and 5 are dismissed from their exterior classroom doors.  Students in Grades 2 and 3 are dismissed from the doorway at the end of the hall.   People who are picking up students are asked to wait at the outside the school.  There are signs with teacher names on the outside doors to assist you locating your child’s classroom.
Kindergarten and first grade students are dismissed one by one to parent/guardians – you must be present outside the classroom at dismissal time.
Written notification is required to release your child to someone other than designated individuals (i.e. if your child is going home with a friend, please send a note to the teacher) Friends and siblings should have a designated spot to meet on the playground if they desire to be together.
For students in Grades 2 to 5, we encourage parents/guardians to establish a regular pick up area where your child can meet you each day;
If you are delayed getting to the school at dismissal time, please notify the main office at 781-944-2335.  You child will wait in the office until you arrive at school.
Students attending after school programs will be dismissed from their classroom to their after school activity.

Late Arrival

The second bell rings at 8:25 a.m.  A student arriving after 8:25 a.m. is considered late.  Tardy students must sign in at the office.

If your child is going to be late due to an appointment, please call 24-hour absentee line (781-942-9173) and leave a message indicating the child will be late. If your child arrives after 8:25 a.m., you should walk them into the office and sign them in.

We understand that with the Reading Memorial High School start time of 8:30 there will be increased traffic around Birch Meadow School.  We will be monitoring late arrivals to determine how many are the result of traffic back up due to increased traffic in the Birch Meadow area.  As we collect this information we will respond to it, if necessary.

Animals/Pets on School Property

Please be aware that it Reading Public Schools policy that pets/animals (like dogs) cannot be on school property, including the playground and driveway.  The exception to this policy is service animals.

Walkers

Walkers are expected to cross at crosswalks.  Crossing guards are assigned at both arrival and dismissal times at three crossing guard locations around Birch Meadow School:

The intersection of Birch Meadow Drive and Arthur B Lord Drive

The cross walk on Birch Meadow Drive that leads from the fields to the Birch Meadow playground driveway. 

Your child should always cross the street at crosswalks with crossing guards.

 

Bicycle Policy

For safety reasons, only students in grades 3, 4, and 5 are allowed to ride their bicycles to and from school without adult supervision. Younger children are permitted to ride when accompanied by an adult. Children are required to walk their bicycles when on the school grounds. A bicycle rack is provided at the rear of the building and children are instructed to securely lock their bicycles to the rack. Birch Meadow is not responsible for lost, stolen  or damaged bicycles. The above policy also applies to rollerblades, scooters, and skateboards.

Bicycle riders are expected to cross at crosswalks.

By state law, all students must wear safety helmets while riding bicycles, scooters, rollerblades and skateboards.

Changes to Dismissal

If you are dismissing your child prior to the end of the school day, follow these procedures.

The parent/guardian must notify the teacher in writing.
The parent or authorized pick-up person should go to the main office and sign the child out.  The office will call the teacher and ask the child to come to the office for pick-up. 
In the case of an emergency situation, we will confirm a telephone request but will expect a note to follow.
No child will be dismissed unescorted or with an unknown person.

We will check IDs for unknown adults picking up students.
